Weapon Upgrading and How to Acquire Legendary Weapons

Blade and Soul has a complex weapon system that is unlike any other game. It is fairly difficult to learn, but the execution is simple, at least for the early and middle parts of the game. In the late game, it becomes a little more difficult because more choices open up, and there is more to do. The weapon upgrade system drives much of the grinding in the game, because weapons play a big role in how much damage output your character has and, therefore, what dungeons you can attempt. In this article, we will explain how the weapon upgrade system works.

BnS - Weapon Upgrading-1First of all, the most important thing to know when you are starting out is that for most of the game, you will be using the same basic weapon. Every class has their own weapon: Blade Masters get swords, Kung-Fu Masters get gloves, Summoners get paint brushes, and so on. These are thematic for each class, but they are all upgraded in the same way, so you can follow this guide regardless of your class.
The main story weapon is also called the Hongmoon weapon, although as always this name is subject to change as the translation process evolves. You will obtain it fairly early in the game.

Main Story Weapon

The main story weapon will stick with you for a long time. You upgrade it in the following way. First, you feed it lower-level weapons. It starts off at level 1, and you upgrade it up to level 5. Once it reaches level five, you will need to make a “breakthrough.” What that means is that it is a special weapon upgrade. It requires a a specific set of ingredients and weapons. After you get past the breakthrough point, you can continue on and upgrade up to level 10. At level 10, there is another special upgrade where you evolve the weapon. Once again, there is a specific set of ingredients that you need to use, not like the usual level-ups, which can use anything of a minimum quality. Only the main story weapon evolves- others can break through and make it to level 10, but for most of the game it is only your main weapon that can go beyond that.

Once your weapon evolves, it changes names and gets a new appearance. Of course, its stats also increase along the way, both during level-ups, breakthroughs, and evolutions. Your main story weapon can evolve many times, and until you get to level 45, it is the only weapon you can access that is capable of evolving. Leveling up starts to become more and more difficult, particularly the evolutions. They require more advanced and difficult-to-acquire ingredient items. Some of them need weapons which are themselves leveled up to 5 or even 10, and others are just connected to rare drops or tough bosses.

Access to Legendary Weapons

The good news is that you do not need to level up your main story weapon the entire way. Once you get to level 45, things start to change. More weapons open up as viable. First, you get access to the Silverfrost weapon. This is currently not very good, but it is worth keeping around just in case. The developer does make changes to the weapon system that affect which weapons are good. After you make progress through Act 4, you will start to get access to the S-series of legendary weapons. These weapons provide a more diverse selection and are more suitable for the endgame content. The main story weapon is not terrible, and it is possible to keep using it and evolving it, but it is not the strongest weapon available once you cross over into the last few levels and hit the level cap.

The S-series system is still in flux, and right now they are mostly useful for PvE and the open PvP system. Arena PvP automatically equalizes gear for everyone involved. There is a battleground-style PvP in development that will involve larger groups fighting it out, and gear will not be equalized in that mode. However, it is still some time off, and it is very probable that there will be further refinements to the weapon system between now and when it arrives.

The best approach is to make use of your main story weapon, upgrading as you need it, until 45. There are even quests now that drop evolved forms of the main weapon as rewards, so you may not even need to upgrade it yourself. After you hit level 45, then you can start looking at the S-series and decide which of those weapons you want to pursue next. The grind starts to become significant, but the increase in power is also significant. Higher levels introduce the idea of failed upgrades. The breakthroughs or evolutions have a chance to not work, consuming the materials but giving you nothing. As you can imagine, this is frustrating and adds to the grind.

As you can see, the Blade and Soul approach to weaponry is rather unusual. Its focus on upgrading a single weapon is streamlined compared to other games, but there is still quite a lot of grind, especially at the top end.
